SEXUAL HEALTH AWARENESS – ARE WE NEGLECTING OR TAKING CARE OF OUR SEXUAL HEALTH?

When anyone hears or speak about the term, “sexual health,” they generally think only about neglecting an unexpected pregnancy or prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Although the sexual health is actually a sunshade terminology that encircle various features of an individual’s mental and physical welfare encompassing sex and sexuality.

How to identify the sexually healthy individual?

According to American Sexual Health Association, 

  • They understand that sexuality is a natural part of someone’s life and involves more than just sexual behaviour.
  • They recognize that everyone has sexual rights.
  • They make safe, reliable efforts to prevent unintended pregnancy and STIs.
  • They are willing to utilize sexual health resources.
  • They can experience sexual pleasure, satisfaction, and intimacy when they desire.
  • They can openly communicate about their sexual health and needs with intimate partners and healthcare providers when needed.

Gravity of sexual health

Sexual health is really significant because it empowers individuals to take care of their reproductive health, and their mental health awareness neighbouring their nearest relations. 

Enlightenment

Sex education is taught in many schools throughout the country However, the curricula typically vary and may only teach students about the possibility of becoming pregnant or spreading STIs when they have sex.  

Assurance/safety

When discussing sexual health, safety is a term that may refer to avoidance of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections or prevention from sexual exploitation. Sexually healthy people enrol in safe sex practices

While the best way to prevent unplanned pregnancy is to practice self-denial (not having sex), it’s not practical approach for many individuals. Admiringly, a further fruitful idea is arranging contraception

Hormonal techniques, for example the pill, patch, ring, & IUD (intrauterine device), are better alternatives for women who need to take larger restraints over their reproductive health, as they are majorly efficient at preventing pregnancy when used as advised by the doctor. 

Although, these procedures do not prevent individuals from the spread of STIs that is sexually transmitted infections. Hence, it is required to adopt an extra kind of birth prevention technique, like a condom during the period of penetrative sex (i.e., penis-to-vagina or penis-to-anus). 

Intercommunication

Whenever a person becomes sexually active, it’s prominent that they intercommunicate or talk or discuss with their doctors and healthcare unit. Although it may give a sense of  annoyance to talk like this private subject, the more open you are, the more a healthcare team will be able to deliver informed, efficient concern. 

It is specifically required to discuss with a doctor if you are taking hormonal birth control. Once they have a clue of your health information or history and current lifestyle, they can suggest something they feel will be most suitable for you.

It is also required to have valid and effective communication with your partner. Relationships bloom when both partners are willingly communicating their wants, expectations, and borders. 

Factors that are necessary for healthy sexual relationship

A healthy sexual relationship involves the surrounding of straight and clear demarcation of discussion.

Being a healthy sexual relationship initiates with making yourself happy!

What are the consequences of poor sexual health?

Poor sexual health can result to a host of conflicting outcomes. Absence of approach to education and/or resources can result in to unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Apart from that, not being able to communicate with doctors can result in long-term health problems. For exemplification, it is necessary to be open with your doctor or healthcare member about your sexual health, as they would be able to guide you for confirmation that it is under supervision or check. 

Likewise, indulging in a relationship that is incomplete can ultimately lead to poor mental health and at the end, devastating one’s overall quality of life. With that said, being reliable both with your partner and yourself is an intensely important division of regulating good sexual health.

How to improve sexual health?

Stigma and guilt are social conditioning that can lead to individuals to disrespect or ignore their requirements or those of their partner. In some nitty-gritty, it may be useful to discuss or talk to a therapist who have knowledge and helpful of sexual health.

A therapist can give an individual with the techniques they require to manage them to communicate their border and expectations with respect, and in a safe, non-discriminative judgment-free surroundings.

It’s also very necessary to discuss with the doctor or healthcare team about specific sexual health requirement.
