Rise in Cardiac Problems Among Indians: Fitness Doesn't Mean Healthy.

  • 9 Oct 2021

Fitness regimes, weight loss programs, workouts, and diets are all buzzwords in today's world. Most of us are involved in many physical activities to stay fit, look good and maintain a healthy weight. We are all into different diets, and we visit fitness centers to stay fit. Technology is also in the game of enabling fitness, from applications to smartwatches.

However, most of us have failed to identify the fine line between fitness and healthiness. Today, cases of heart attacks among more youthful age groups are rising shockingly. If we see the figures, two out of ten people with attacks are among the patients in the age bracket of 30-40. Even in young adults, the conventional risk factors of the heart account for most heart attacks that include diabetes, high BP (blood pressure), inherited medical conditions, high cholesterol, and smoking.

We blindly believe that fitness is the key to being healthy. In most cases, this is not true. Why do we say this? Read on to know…

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover.

Looking at the recent demise of Bollywood actor Sidharth Shukla due to a fatal cardiac arrest, passing away of Raj Kaushal due to the same reason, many people are in utter shock at how could something like this happen to physically fit men like them! While there are many theories on how this happened, let us focus on the health aspects.

We believe that mixing health with fitness could mess up your system. Even if you are crazy about fitness and observe a healthy diet, stress could be the reason for your heart issues. Today, youngsters tend to have an unhealthy lifestyle due to many reasons, including stress, inadequate sleep, alcohol consumption, smoking, unsafe supplements, and excess exercise. These practices are harmful to health and can cause various health complications that lead to unforeseen heart attacks.

Every individual should maintain a healthy diet balancing carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Include fresh fruits and fresh vegetables on your daily plate, and everyone needs to schedule an annual health checkup.

Look Out for Warning Signs

One may not always observe warning signs, but if you face breathing issues, chest, arm, or jaw discomfort while physically exerting yourself, some important steps could be taken, and the fatality can be reduced.

If you had been affected by Covid-19, get your heart screened every six months after recovery. This is one of the most important Covid precautions to keep your heart safe. Covid can cause underlying cardiac injury, like myocardial inflammation. Recovered Covid patients need to ensure that they start exercising gradually and steadily and only after the approval and recommendation from their treating healthcare provider. They need to ensure that they go to their health providers immediately if they encounter shortness of breath, palpitations, chest discomfort or dizziness.

Do not miss your regular medical checkups with your healthcare provider, and do not take any kind of discomfort lightly. Young people often tend to ignore or not report discomfort or mistake it for other things like gas which causes a heart attack. And when it occurs, it can be massive and instantly fatal. Young people assume that their arteries won't get blocked as they are young. Therefore, they don't go for annual checkups. If one has a family history of heart disease and is above 25, it is important to opt for an annual health checkup.

Our body changes and responds differently as we grow, and we need to ensure that we are aware of what is happening inside.

Patients with minor blockages can also suffer tremendous heart attacks. To prevent this, people at high risk, such as those with high cholesterol, high blood glucose levels, high blood pressure, smokers, and those with family records of early heart problems, should go for regular physical checkups and function towards changing their lifestyle to a healthier one.

One hardly has 3-4 minutes to revive a person when they collapse upon a heart attack, and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is crucial at that juncture. Hence, for the benefit of all, awareness should be spread in society about the importance of knowing CPR.

Project Global Cure re-emphasizes that looking fit or working out at the gym does not mean you are in good health or leading a healthy lifestyle. Fitness and healthiness are distinctly identified and should not be misunderstood. This doesn't mean that you should stop working out or exercising. We recommend you consult a doctor for proper guidance on diet, supplements, mental wellbeing and exercise at the earliest.
